Fun ways to stay fit and healthy in Huntsville
Here in Huntsville, we are in the middle of summer, and let’s face it: it is hot. Most people would rather be inside enjoying that sweet, sweet AC than be outside mowing, walking the dog, or (God forbid) exercising. Why do anything in the heat that’s not absolutely necessary? We’ll skip the lecture about the importance of getting up and moving so we can tell you how we can help you get there. No, we can’t do anything about the heat, but we can help you move! If the only reason to exercise is “good for your health”, that’s pretty uninspiring, right? By doing something fun when you sweat, it’s no longer a chore! So read on for our full list of fun ways to stay fit and healthy right here in Huntsville!
- Hiking
This is first on our list due to the fact that Huntsville and its surrounding areas have TONS of hiking trails. Just so many. Monte Sano alone has enough to keep you occupied for a long time (and it has great reception, so you can listen to adventure music on Spotify and pretend you’re exploring!). There’s also Green Mountain (zero reception, so we don’t recommend going here alone), Rainbow Mountain (out in Madison, lots of rocks to clamber over, moderately difficult), Hays Nature Preserve (very family friendly!), and many more.
2. Bike Riding
Huntsville is working on becoming a city that welcomes bikes with its Bikeway Plan, but until that’s finished, plenty of the trails mentioned above are cyclist friendly. We also have a recent addition in Blue Bike, a cheap and easy bike rental around town! You use an app to rent and everything (the future is now). Click here to read more details.
3. Ice Skating
You wouldn’t think this was an option during the summer here if you’ve never been to the Huntsville Ice Sports Center. With public skate time available throughout the week (and the entire year), this is a cheap way to sweat and stay cool doing so. And if you want to learn, they also offer lessons!
4. Rock Climbing
High Point Fitness Climbing and Fitness is the place you’ll need to go for rock climbing in Huntsville. This is a slightly pricier option ($25 with the gear you’ll need included), but what a blast! Go alone or compete with friends to see who can climb the fastest for a good time for you AND your body.
5. Pure Barre
Don’t have enough rhythm for Zumba or enough athleticism for ballet? Pure Barre gives the best of both worlds with a total body workout; this low-impact, high-intensity class will have you sweating before the first song is finished (this class is musically driven as well, so you can sing along- if you can catch your breath.)
6. Roller Skating
Relive your fourth grade birthday party in style at Insanity Complex! Just like with ice skating, you’ll work out your core and your legs, and you can drag some friends along to make it even more fun!
