How to Enjoy a Rainy Day in the Tennessee Valley
Wanting to explore Huntsville, but the weather disagrees? Grab an umbrella, throw on some rain boots, and check out our list of rainy day activities for Huntsville!
Go to a local coffee shop
What better way to explore the local culture while it’s rainy than a cozy coffee shop/bakery? Find some Huntsville favorites (like Canadian Bakin, Honest Coffee, Gold Sprint, Rooster’s Crow, Piper & Leaf- the list goes on and on), grab something warm, and find a seat by the window. If you’d rather be moving around than relaxing with a hot drink, check out The Kaffeklatsch downtown: it’s a local roaster that’s been around for years, and the smell is intoxicating (it’s pretty much just for shopping, so you won’t be tempted to rest at a table).
Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt
If you don’t mind the mess, take the kids on the on a scavenger hunt around downtown! They can jump in puddles as the whole family finds 15 hidden rubber ducks. It’s great exercise, and the weather shouldn’t be too hot in the rain.

Explore Lowe Mill
Lowe Mill is the largest privately-owned arts facility in the United States, and it’s mostly indoors at an old textile mill. There’s plenty to see and good food to eat (Chef Will’s food truck for a late lunch and Pizzelle’s Confections make for a fantastic day). Plus, with three floors of artists and creators, you’ll easily fill an afternoon with activities.
Take a (safe) hike
We know you shouldn’t hike when it’s rainy: the ground is muddy and slippery, and you can do damage to both yourself and nature. However, there are a few areas to know if you still want to get in a good walk. Indian Creek Parkway is a good green space to see while it’s raining, as is the Botanical Garden (and it is thriving this spring). You can also walk around downtown and see the sights with your headphones on (and hopefully some waterproof sneakers).
Note: Please DO NOT spend time outside if thunder and/or lightning are present.
Find a local show/concert
Huntsville has plenty of indoor venues to see local (and not so local) performers, so make sure to look up who’s around! Just a few venues to start with: Stand Up Live, Mars Music Hall, Theatre Huntsville, Voodoo Lounge Bar & Grill, Sidetracks Music Hall, Stovehouse, The Camp, and so many more.
