How to Make a House a Home
If you’ve ever moved into a new place, whether an apartment or a house, you’ve probably stared at blank walls and empty shelves and wondered how to make it look like yours? Or maybe you’ve been in one place for a while and still can’t make your assortment of stuff feel cozy, check out our list to make your house feel like a home.
Declutter
This is not a fun step, but it’s crucial: if you never have enough storage or get overwhelmed looking at your decor, you could probably do with some decluttering. Help the space breathe! If you haven’t read that book in five years, donate it and let someone else enjoy it. If that figurine from a garage sale is cute but doesn’t make you happy, let it go. When you declutter, your favorite items get a chance to shine, and your space has more meaning.
Add artwork to the walls
Pictures, favorite movie posters, pretty artwork from local artists- hang it up! Take it out of the envelopes and shipping containers and let yourself enjoy it. Fun tip: push pins work well with light items, and the holes are small and easy to fill (especially if you’re renting).
Throw down an area rug
An area rug placed under a sofa and coffee table can tie a space together better than anything. It is a visual centerpiece that works on any floor type (including carpets), and has the added bonus of protecting your floors.
Hang up drapery
Hanging up curtains just add a touch of completeness to a room. They can add a pop of color or make a neutral room feel more mature, and they draw attention to the windows and natural light coming in.
Use some lamps
Whether you have some not so great light fixtures or just need more light, lamps add extra warmth and coziness to your home. A lot of newer light fixtures use cool blue LEDs, which can have a sterile glow. Switching to some warm LEDs and adding some floor and desk lamps can do wonders for a home.
Make a space for yourself
The most important part of making your house a home: make a space for yourself. Where do you spend your time at home? Is it peaceful? Is it cozy? Do you feel comfortable in that space? Keep your space clean, add visual elements that make you happy, and make sure the lighting is warm and inviting.
