How to Prepare for Severe Weather
As we move into April, we also move into a stormy time of the year (and we’ve already seen some in March). Take a look at these tips on how to prepare for the weather ahead.
Be weather-ready
Check the forecast to know when severe weather may strike. Consider purchasing a weather radio or at minimum download one to your smartphone.
Know your safe place
Know the safest place in your home and plan to stay there during the storm. If you have a basement, this will be the safest location. If not, a bathroom (hunker down in the shower or tub) or room in the center of the house, away from any windows is usually the safest option.
Have a plan
Have an emergency family plan in place so that family members know where to evacuate and/or reunite in case anyone gets separated.
Stock up on supplies
Do you have small children in diapers or a dog that needs food? Make sure you have basic everyday necessities and also fresh water, flashlights, batteries, non-perishable foods, etc. – and check your stockpile regularly to make sure your supply is fresh.
Prepare the generator
Make sure your generator is in working order and have fresh fuel on hand. Stale fuel is the number one reason that gas generators won’t start so always drain the fuel for long-term storage.
Lend a hand
In the event there is damage from the storm, be ready to lend a helping hand to others once the storm is passed. Also, consider letting a neighbor charge their devices if you have a working generator.
